The Atrium (351 Abbott at Hastings)

5:30 – 6:30 pm – Performance

2:30 – 4:30 pm – Open Rehearsal

The Woodward’s Atrium, one of Vancouver’s most important indoor public spaces created in Vancouver in the last decade will reverberate with the sound of horns and other instruments played by some of the top musicians and improvisers in Vancouver, many who are members of the amazing Hard Rubber Orchestra.

Music will be improvised, composed, arranged and performed to complement and incorporate the acoustics of this large reverberant space. The program will include new work by composers, John Korsrud, Lisa Miller and Brad Muirhead as well as early and baroque music. Thirteen musicians from Vancouver’s classical and jazz scenes will fill the space with music immersing those attending in vibrant music and sounds only possible in such a cavernous space.

An open rehearsal will be held in the Atrium before the performance for those interested in seeing how the music is prepared and rehearsed within a large public space and within a short time frame.

This project is being presented in conjunction with the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI), the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and the University of British Columbia.

The Hard Rubber New Music Society gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the City of Vancouver through Cultural Services and the Province of British Columbia through Community Gaming Grants.
